Christopher Plummer and the "Paradox of Pain, Sadness, and Talent.”

I used to think it was all the great things that happened in my life - my wins, my successes, that would connect and endear me to others. I used to think that it was happiness that leads to talent.
But after revisiting a 1964 interview with Christopher Plummer who passed away this week (best known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music) I was reminded, maybe it’s actually out of pain and sadness that most talent and deep personal connection grow out of.

A mentor of mine passed away this weekend.
He was 87 and possibly the most curious person of all time.
He made a living by talking, but would constantly tell me things like, “I never learn a thing while I’m talking. I realize every morning that nothing I say today will teach me anything, so if I’m going to learn a lot today, I’ll have to do it by listening.”
He changed my life in more ways than one and he’s the reason I had the confidence to start my podcast, but here’s the strangest part about our relationship…
I never met the man.

Are you a Solo Artist or Singer-Songwriter that's experienced frustration when it comes to negotiating your fee with venues and booking agents?
A friend recently voiced their frustration saying, "it is bullshit to pay a solo artist less than a full band for the same amount of performance time..."
Because I understand what it's like to be frustrated with the commerce side of music, instead of just saying, "Well, that's just the way things work." I decided to explain HOW venues approach compensation and give a couple of action steps because YOU DESERVE TO GET PAID FOR YOUR MUSIC!
Here was my reply...

Lisa Kudrow's Advice For Performers and "The Contagiousness of Energy"
Thursday Oct 08, 2020
Thursday Oct 08, 2020
I was recently listening to an interview with Lisa Kudrow (best known for acting on F.R.I.E.N.D.S.) In it, she talked about how, if you’re stepping on stage to perform, your NUMBER 1 PRIORITY is to be confident, relaxed, and comfortable.
“The audience is uncomfortable if you’re uncomfortable.”
I’ve known for years that, when we step on stage, we set the tone of the room but here’s the deal…
I haven’t been spending as much time on stage these past few months, but I’ve been wondering if this is true in my everyday life as well. Is energy contagious? What would it look like if I was as intentional about my energy say… when we walk into a room or jump on a zoom call lately?
I feel cheezy as hell talking about this stuff sometimes, but man, I wish someone would have told me years ago that we all have this low-key superpower we're not tapping into called, setting the tone.

We Got COVID! (Why you should stop listening to EVERYone’s opinions)

Thank you to those that have reached out, noticing that the podcast suddenly stopped this month and that I’ve been absent from social media.
Following a week in bed with a stomach bug at the top of September, once I was FINALLY feeling better, Sarah and I both contracted COVID and were completely wiped out… scary stuff!
Interestingly, even with the numbers so high, it’s hard to wrap my mind around (1 million deaths worldwide, 200k deaths and 7.2 million JUST IN THE U.S.!) I still had a ton of friends saying that Sarah and I were the first people they knew personally who got it.
So, I pulled out the ol’ camcorder and recorded a video talking about what our experience looked like. (Testing, symptoms, and recovery) but first… we need to talk about all the opinions floating around out there.
Everyone seems to have a Medical Degree from Facebook University and when it comes to something serious like this… it can become pretty overwhelming.
