Sarah and I are smashing beignets at Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter of New Orleans. We just left Euclid, a record store on the East side of town with a stack of vinyl and I’m suddenly struck with a realization… The reason I just had such a killer experience discovering new music is directly related to a conversation I had with my friends Ian and Jorge this last summer about coming up with a better question to ask when asking for a recommendation. Sushi, beer, food, cocktails, music… doesn’t matter. This shit works and I wish I would have known about it years ago!

I’ve had quite a few requests through the podcast hotline and website email asking for us to bring in someone to flip the norm and interview ME on the podcast.

While we haven’t quite figured out the right fit for what that would look like, I’ve decided to start sharing some of the other podcast interviews that I’ve been brought in to be a guest on over the past couple years.

Derek Droogsma is a musician in the twin cities area who interviewed me this summer for his new podcast “Catching Up With…”

If you’ve been on social media this past week, you may have noticed artists and musicians sharing screenshots of what Spotify calls their “year-in-review.” (It essentially gives an artist analytics on number of streams of each song or album and where in the world people are listening to their music.

I’ve been loving seeing artist friends say thank you to everyone listening to their music and talk about how encouraged they are to see those numbers grow but then I got to thinking…

What happens when you look at the numbers… and it’s not what you expected? What happens when less people come out to your show than you were hoping? What happens when less people are reading your new blog than you had expected by now? What happens when you look at the numbers… and are discouraged?

I’ve got the morning off in a hotel room, downtown Omaha Nebraska, and I want to share four questions that I ask myself whenever I’m discouraged by the numbers that I believe will help you if you ever find yourself in that situation.
